What if the future isn’t fixed?

What if we get to co-create it?

“So much of the harm we see in organisations isn’t the result of bad intentions. It’s a failure of imagination.”

Too often, systems stay stuck because people can’t imagine anything different.
Our Experimental Labs create the space—and the permission—to think otherwise.

These are not workshops. They’re creative, strategic spaces where teams are invited to think differently, feel deeply, and act bravely.

Whether you’re trying to shift a stuck culture, reimagine how decisions are made, or explore new ways of working—our labs offer the structure and provocation to do just that.

Why call it a lab?

Because not everything will work—and that’s the point.

An experiment is an opportunity to try something new, and that means it might not work the first time. But we’ll be there with you—to test, learn, fail, iterate, and try again.

We don’t promise polished solutions. We promise partnership, provocation, and learning that leads to real change.

What happens in a lab?

Each lab is bespoke and designed in collaboration with you.

Depending on your needs, this could include:

  • Surfacing cultural tensions and power dynamics

  • Prototyping new ways of working

  • Co-designing policies, processes or practices rooted in equity

  • Using creative methods to imagine and test anti-racist futures

  • Building accountability frameworks grounded in care

Who is it for?

Labs are for organisations and teams who are:
  • Ready to slow down and reflect

  • Open to discomfort, experimentation and learning

  • Seeking meaningful, systemic change—not surface-level solutions

  • Willing to challenge what they’ve always done

Whether you’re redesigning decision-making, rethinking your values, or exploring how to embed anti-racism across your organisation, a lab can help make that work real.

Previous Labs have...

Supported teams and organisations to:

  • Co-create anti-racist codes of conduct and inclusive commissioning frameworks

  • Develop working together agreements grounded in care, power analysis, and accountability

  • Prototype new leadership models, including language guides and accountability frameworks

  • Reimagine evaluation through a justice lens, embedding equity into how impact is measured

  • Build mandates for inclusion in practice—clear, actionable commitments with internal traction

  • Redesign meeting structures to disrupt power dynamics and centre marginalised voices

  • Create appraisal processes and grievance procedures that foster transparency and safety

These experiments are co-designed, context-specific, and rooted in your organisational realities—not generic fixes.

Talk With Us

Working with The What If Experiment to develop our organisational values was a deep and meaningful piece of work. They facilitated a space free of judgement where we could speak honestly about our experiences, acted as a mirror to ensure those experiences were heard and then assisted us to transform our aspirations into accountable values in practice. They are an honest critical friend, able to lean into difficult conversations in order to breakthrough to a place of openness and integrity.

Working with The What If Experiment has been edifying and illuminating for our team and board. Their core value, radical generosity, is palpable in every interaction. They have opened up new thought pathways, and new possibilities for us in finding complex solutions to complex challenges. We couldn’t recommend their work enough.
